The number 4 is often viewed as the basic number of the earth in its manifested form. We have 4 directions and many of the human structures are built in squares or rectangular shapes and express a sense of solidity.
4 relates to the planets Saturn and Earth, the color green, the month April and the letters D and M. Its attributes are self-discipline, practicality and practical application, budgeting, the physical work, physical and mental concentration and endurance, order and form, method, routine, systematic approach, construction, industriousness, mechanical and mental precision, conventionality and respectability, comfort with the existing order of things and respect for existing values, honesty and reliability, concern for home, patriotism, love of nature and earth; the fourth cycle corresponds to a period of discipline and practical application. It can however also manifest as lack of discipline, laziness, procrastination or over- discipline, reactionary tendencies, fear of progress, too much caution and practicality, limited viewpoint, fixed opinions, stinginess with money, things and affection, stubbornness and defensiveness.
From a physics or energetic point of view, square or rectangular shapes in two or more dimensions take more energy to maintain than they give. Native people around the world knew intuitively or through direct experience and observation about this phenomenon and consequently built round (domes, kivas, mounds, tipis, igloos) or many-angled structures. Today the findings of science confirm the wisdom of the ancients.
